Brow or Forehead Lift

The best candidates for the brow lift surgery are individuals with sagging or low eyebrows, forehead creases and frown lines. This is a quick surgical procedure, taking between one and two hours, which are completed on an outpatient basis. The brow lift or forehead lift procedure is to slow down sagging eyebrows, creases and frown lines. The brow lift surgery is a common cosmetic surgery done in the US.

The results are not necessarily permanent, but they are long lasting and may not need to be repeated. Brow lifts are becoming increasingly popular, with more than 50,000 procedures being performed in 2005 alone, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The Brow Lift or Forehead Lift Procedure

Forehead lifts are performed in outpatient medical facilities, hospitals and office surgical suites. There are different types of anesthesia that may be appropriate, so speak to your surgery when planning for your surgery. Local anesthesia is usually all that is required for a forehead lift, meaning that you are awake but sedated and unable to feel the procedure. The time in surgery is generally only between one and two hours, and you should be able to return home the same day, usually within a few hours after your surgery.

Conventional Forehead Lift Surgery

Your hair will be trimmed and tied back from the area where the incision is being made. The incision will be made in the least visible place possible, such as long your hairline or along the natural bone structure lines atop your scalp. One long incision is generally made, beginning at one ear and ending at the other. The forehead skin is then lifted and any extra tissue is removed so that the eyebrows can be properly lifted. If there is extra skin, it will be removed at this point, then the incision will be stitched or clipped close and gauze will be applied. Bandages can generally be removed 2-3 days after the surgery, and stitches or clips can be removed after about two weeks following the surgical procedure.

  • Some of the things that you may experience following a conventional forehead may include:
  • Temporary numbness or discomfort, which can be managed with medication.
  • Headache, which is an effect of the anesthesia.
  • Swelling, this can be managed with elevation of the head and can subside generally within a week
  • Odd or unusual sensations, including lack of sensation or itching at the line where the incision is.
  • Hair loss, with regrowth generally occurring within one to three months of the surgery
